Good Faith Estimates

NOTICE OF YOUR RIGHT TO A GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE (GFE)

As of January 2022, by law, mental health and other health providers are required to provide their self-paying clients with a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of the cost of services provided on a yearly basis (or of the range of possible cost). Then if the amount billed is $400 over the estimated GFE, the client is entitled to pay $25 and file a petition disputing the bill.

The GFE needs to be provided on a yearly basis and updated if more services are expected than originally determined by the provider; i.e., the GFE can be revised at any time.

If the client decides to file a dispute, they must do so within 120 days of the original bill indicating that the amount billed is $400 over the GFE. Clients can then call the therapist and request to have the bill be updated to match the GFE, to negotiate the bill, or to ask if there is financial assistance available.

Note: The Good Faith Estimate is not a contract. It does not obligate the client to receive services listed. The GFE needs to include the type of services provided, the number of sessions, the diagnosis code and the therapist’s TIN and NPI numbers.

For further information and to get a form to start the dispute process, go to www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call CMS at 1 800 985 3059.
